Adventure Links Education Intern Program

Offered year round, internships at Adventure Links provide a platform for self-motivated, enthusiastic undergraduate and graduate students looking to build career-related skills. Adventure Links seeks self-motivated, creative individuals with an interest in nature, conservation, and education program development. Participants will have the opportunity to build career-related skills in an informal education environment. Adventure Link’s environmental education programs are designed to inspire conservation action by sparking curiosity and understanding of the environment through engaging, interactive learning experiences. Team development programs are designed to transfer real life challenges to our low & high ropes course activities; building trust, improving group dynamics & communication, and stimulating personal growth.
The Education Intern works closely with the Administration Team to assist in the creation, development and implementation of lesson plans, educator resource materials, and evaluation tools for a wide range of audience ages. Education interns will also learn industry expertise methods of engaging guests of all ages and backgrounds using interpretation tools and best practices.
Internship Eligibility
- Must be at least 18 years of age
- Must possess unrestricted work authorization
- Must provide 20+ hours of work availability for 12 consecutive weeks
- Must provide own transportation to/from work
Required Education
- College student or recent graduate majoring in education, history, biology, or a related field
- Must be a sophomore or higher at the start of the internship
- Student in good standing: GPA 2.5 or higher
Required Qualifications
- Must commit to a minimum of 20+ hours per week for 12 consecutive weeks
- Experience working with children
- Ability to speak in public with large & small groups
- A passion for working in and for the outdoors
- Have a familiarity with Microsoft Office
- Should be comfortable shooting live action in low, in/outdoor, and varying light situations
- Have strong verbal communication skills, and pleasant telephone manner
- Be energetic, outgoing, and enthusiastic to learn
- Must have excellent interpersonal skills, be detail-oriented, organized, and effective time manager
- Be a fast paced & team player
- Require minimal supervision
- Be self-motivated, reliable, and able to work outdoors in all weather conditions
- Ability to abide by all Adventure Links staff guidelines & policies
- Ability to exercise care & judgement when working around outdoor recreation facilities and groups of all sizes & demographics
Benefits
Internships are unpaid, but course credit can be arranged with the intern’s educational institution. The intern is responsible for obtaining necessary approvals from their university for course credit.
Internship Schedule
Adventure Links internships require a commitment of at least 20 hours per week for 12 consecutive weeks and run Monday thru Friday 9:00 a.m. - 5:00 p.m. Individual scheduling for internships are flexible. Some weekend hours during select special events may be available.

Offered year round, internships at Adventure Links provide a platform for self-motivated, enthusiastic undergraduate and graduate students looking to build career-related skills. Adventure Links seeks self-motivated, creative individuals with an interest in photography and the modern media industry. Participants will have the opportunity to gain practical, hands-on experience and valuable knowledge in a well-rounded marketing role involving digital communications, media relations, and audience development.
The Media Intern works closely with the Administration Team to generate strong written and visual content showcasing Adventure Links’ campus, events, and programming. The Media Internship offers the opportunity to work in a fast-paced, professional environment and learn about the marketing use and archival importance of digital content. Responsibilities include producing high quality and creative photography, videography, and written content that is relevant to the mission of Adventure Links. Duties also include editing and cataloging digital content, providing editing and photo assistant support to the Administration Team, and curating social media platforms and website.

- Possess a strong background in digital photography/videography and have working knowledge of Adobe Photoshop
- Have a familiarity with Microsoft Office & basic photo-editing and video-editing software; knowledge of Illustrator, Adobe Acrobat, Multi-Platform Linking, and Final Cut Pro are a plus
- Should be comfortable shooting live action in low, in/outdoor, and varying light situations
- Have strong verbal communication skills, and pleasant telephone manner

Northern Virginia - Three Season Instructor (Spring 2020-Fall 2020)
Duration: 8 Months

Job Details:
During the spring season instructors mainly lead team-building and environmental education programs with school age youth groups. During our summer season staff members lead summer camp programs or group programs. On weeks that are not full with programs, supplemental hourly work will be available. During our fall season staff members lead our group programs. Hourly work relates to current Adventure Links programs or facility projects.
Housing:
One of the major benefits of Adventure Links is the ability to live on-site, in small dorm like buildings on 235 acres of beautiful park land, with a community of peers. Along with this staff housing we offer a community kitchen/ bathroom with showers, laundry and wireless internet. Participating in this lifestyle is often a significant growth experience for our staff members.

Qualifications:
- Minimum 21 years old. College degree in related field preferred.
- WFA and CPR Minimum. WFR expected by second year of employment. Staff members with WFR certification are given preference on overnight and expedition programs.
- Experience working with youth in a leadership role. Training and experience relating to outdoor leadership, experiential education or classroom teaching is preferred.
- Flexible, good humored and personable.
- Invested in running quality Outdoor Education programs and developing skills as a facilitator and outdoor leader.
- Strong work ethic, responsible and accountable.
- Preference is given to applicants who are able to work for the entire length the employment period.
Essential Functions:
- Work full and active days outside in the elements.
- Supervision of campers, students and all other clients.
- Ability to demonstrate and lead activities.
- Genuine desire to work with youth.
- Be able to lift up to 50 lbs.
Responsibilities:
- Supervise participants and maintain emotionally and physically safe environments.
- Implement and instruct outdoor activities and Adventure Links curriculum.
- Manage daily program logistics.
- Maintain program facility and gear.
- Communicate clearly and openly with Adventure Links administration.
- Practice and facilitate Leave No Trace ethic.
Northern Virginia - Two Season Instructor (Summer 2018-Fall 2019)
Duration: 6 Months

Northern Virginia - Summer Camp Instructor (Summer 2020)

Job Details:
As a member of our summer staff, instructors facilitate week long outdoor adventure Day Camps, Residential Camps & Traveling Overnights for youth (8-14). Instructor teams facilitate a new adventure pursuit each day and lead groups of 14 participants as they explore a variety of outdoor recreation sites in Northern Virginia, Maryland and West Virginia.
Housing:
One of the major benefits of Adventure Links is the ability to live outside, in a platform tent, with a community of peers on 325 acres of beautiful park land. We also offer a community kitchen/ bathroom amenities, laundry and wireless internet. Participating in this lifestyle is often a significant growth experience for our staff members.

- First Aid and CPR Minimum. WFA/WFR expected by second year of employment. Staff members with WFR certification are given preference on overnight and expedition programs.

Northern Virginia Freelance Instructor
We are currently seeking freelance instructors do join us at our site at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park on an on-call basis. Sign up for shifts and get paid to do what you love!
Position: Freelance Instructor
Location: Hemlock Overlook Regional Park in Clifton, VA
Reports to: Program Director
Department: Programs

Salary: $80-$120/day

Position Overview:
Our Freelance Instructors will be when we are in need of more instructors for our daily programs. We love having lots of people at Hemlock, and at times need more instructors to provide the best and safest experience for our guests. An average day could be from 3-7 hours of work with arrival to Hemlock 30 prior to program start time.
About You:
You live in Northern Virginia/DC-metro area and can commute to Clifton, VA for scheduled program. Besides loving the outdoors and sharing you are at least 21 years old with a genuine desire to work with youth. Able to work full and active days outside in the elements with flexibility, good humor and personable traits. You should have a strong work ethic, be responsible, and accountable. Preferably with experience working with youth and experience in leadership. Lastly, you must be able to operate a motor vehicle and be willing to have a criminal background check performed.
Principal Duties and Responsibilities (Essential Functions):
- Facilitate and lead participants on our low ropes course
- Lead team building activities and ice breakers
- Lead environmental education activities
- Guide groups throughout Hemlock Overlook
- Check in participants
Supervision Received:
This role will report directly to the Program Manager. The freelance instructor is expected to self-align and manage their time. They are responsible for guiding their program through a series of high and low ropes courses. Daily priorities should be self-managed. Daily updates should be provided to the Program Manager.
Compensation:
In addition to being able to pick the events you want to work and spend the day having exciting adventures at Hemlock Overlook, Freelance Instructors are classified as independent contractors and receive the following:

- Compensation of at least $80 per full day program worked ($40 for half day programs)
