Two-Week Residential Adventure Camp

Day 1, Monday

Challenge Course and Zipline at Hemlock Overlook, Clifton, VA

Campers will arrive 8:00 – 9:00 AM, settle into their bunks, and visit the camp store (open during check-in and check-out only). Campers will get to know each other and begin learning to work as a team while participating in a series of interactive initiative games and challenge course elements, including the Zip Line.

Day 2, Tuesday 

Rock Climbing at Elizabeth’s Furnace, Front Royal, VA

Spending a day on the challenge course can only be followed up with one other activity, rock climbing. After going through belay school, it will be time to take to the rock to explore and challenge ourselves on new routes. After a day of climbing, we will take a quick dip in a nearby swimming hole, and then it is off to a nearby campsite.

Day 3, Wednesday

Caving at Glade Cave, Mt. Solon, VA

Cave enthusiasts will enjoy exploring Glade Cave, a larger, muddier cave with more cave features for spelunkers to explore before heading back to Hemlock Overlook

Day 4, Thursday

Hiking in White Oak Canyon, Shenandoah National Park, VA

After spending a day in the muddy depths of Glade cave, campers will have a chance to explore Shenandoah National Park in search of the awesome swimming holes that dot the Cedar Run trail. After cooling off in a few swimming holes, we will head back to Hemlock Overlook for a warm dinner and campfire.

Day 5, Friday

River Tubing on the Bull Run River, Hemlock Overlook Park, VA

A leisurely day of floating down the Bull Run on a tube is a popular activity on a hot summer day. Campers will also learn about the local ecology, wildlife, and flora and fauna while also learning about wilderness skills such as natural shelter building, map and compass skills, and fire building.

Day 6, Saturday

Parent’s Day

Morning activities include field games, arts and crafts, or river tubing. Parents and families are welcome to pick up their campers at 10:00AM and take them off-site for the day. Campers should arrive back at camp at 6:00PM.

Day 7, Sunday

Kayaking/Canoeing on the Bull Run River, Hemlock Overlook Park, VA

Campers will enjoy a day of flat water canoeing or kayaking on the Bull Run River.

Day 8

Sailing on the Potomac River, Alexandria VA

Campers will enjoy a day of sailing in Flying Scots on the Potomac River.

Day 9

Overnight Adventure

Canoeing at Lake Moomaw, Washington and Jefferson National Forest, VA

Campers will travel to beautiful and pristine Lake Moomaw for flat water canoeing and primitive camping at Greenwood Point Campground.

Day 10

Overnight Adventure

Canoeing at Lake Moomaw, Washington and Jefferson National Forest, VA

Campers will travel to beautiful and pristine Lake Moomaw for flat water canoeing and primitive camping at Greenwood Point Campground.

Day 11

Overnight Adventure Conclusion / Return to Hemlock Overlook Park

Campers will travel to beautiful and pristine Lake Moomaw for flat water canoeing.

Day 12

Camp Conclusion/Pick up 4:00 – 5:00 PM

Outdoor Living Skills and Arts & Crafts at Hemlock Overlook Park, VA

After two weeks of adventures, we will spend our last day roaming the woods. Campers will also learn about the local ecology, wildlife, and flora and fauna while also learning about wilderness skills such as natural shelter building, map and compass skills, and fire building.

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Please ensure that all items are labeled with your camper’s name or initials to ensure everything goes home in the right suitcase!
  • Everyone loves getting mail! If you would like to leave letters for your campers with the Instructors at drop­off, we will ensure that they are delivered on the day written on the outside of the envelope.
  • Campers are encouraged to bring only essential items for the trip.
  • Campers should plan to arrive with ONE large duffel bag or backpack, one small day pack or backpack, and a small stuff sack containing a compact sleeping bag.

PACK ITEMS

  • Day pack / Small backpack for day trips
  • Pack/Backpack for overnight travel adventures
  • Sleeping bag and/or sleeping bag liner (Campers will be sleeping on-site at Hemlock’s bunkhouses and in tents)
  • Pillow
  • Reusable water bottles (2)
  • Sunglasses
  • Croakies or other eyewear retainers for campers with glasses or sunglasses
  • Sunscreen (at least 30 SPF)
  • Rain Gear (rain jacket or poncho)
  • Small headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
  • Bug Spray
  • Towels (2)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Shower items (shampoo, conditioner, body soap, washcloth, etc...)

OPTIONAL ITEMS

  • Camera (Adventure Links is not liable if camera is lost or damaged).
  • Book or other non-­electronic, van-­friendly activities for commutes 
  • Journal/pen/pencils
  • Paper, pre­-addressed envelopes, and stamps to send letters home

  • Sweater or light jacket
  • Long sleeved shirt (4)

CAVING GEAR

  • Warm layers (the cave is cold and campers will get DIRTY ­ old sweatshirts and jeans work well!)
  • Boots / sneakers (they will get WET & DIRTY!)
  • Kneepads (optional)
  • Trash bag, labeled with name, to store wet & dirty items
