One-Week Water Based Residential Camp

Each Monday will include team building at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park. The itinerary for Tuesday through Friday will vary each week. The itinerary below is an example only, and the order of the activities will vary. You will receive a detailed itinerary via email the week before your camp session.

Day 1, Monday

Challenge Course and Zip Line at Hemlock Overlook, Clifton, VA

 

After 8:00 – 9:00 AM Drop Off, Campers will get to know each other and begin learning to work as a team while participating in a series of interactive initiative games and challenge course elements, including the Zip Line.

Day 2, Tuesday

Sailing on the Potomac River, Alexandria VA

 

Campers will learn about the parts of a sailboat and basic techniques, and will then board a Flying Scot to enjoy a day on the Potomac River! Campers will help maneuver the boat, and those who are confident and interested will have the opportunity to handle the tiller.

Day 3, Wednesday

Kayaking and Environmental Education, Hemlock Overlook Regional Park, Clifton, VA

 

Campers will enjoy a day of canoe/kayak paddling on the Bull Run River, while also learning through experience about the ecology of the Bull Run Watershed which provides the drinking water for Fairfax County.

Day 4, Thursday

Outdoor Living Skills and Field Day, Hemlock Overlook Regional Park, Clifton, VA

 

Campers will start the day by learning how to thrive in the wilderness with skills like shelter-building, plant identification, fire-building, map and compass work, and tracking animals. After a morning of outdoor living skills, campers will get to compete with their camp teams for points in Camp Olympics.

Day 5, Friday

River Tubing, Hemlock Overlook Park, VA

 

Campers will close out the week with a relaxing day of floating down the Bull Run River.  Pickup will be at 4:00­5:00 PM and don’t forget to visit the camp store before leaving (open during check­in and check­out only)!

IMPORTANT NOTES

  • Please ensure that all items are labeled with your camper’s name or initials to ensure everything goes home in the right suitcase!
  • Everyone loves getting mail! If you would like to leave letters for your campers with the Instructors at drop­off, we will ensure that they are delivered on the day written on the outside of the envelope.
  • Campers are encouraged to bring only essential items for the trip.
  • Campers should plan to arrive with ONE large duffel bag or backpack, one small day pack or backpack, and a small stuff sack containing a compact sleeping bag.

PACK ITEMS

  • Day pack / Small backpack for day trip
  • Sleeping bag
  • Pillow
  • Reusable water bottles (2)
  • Sunglasses
  • Croakies or other eyewear retainers for campers with glasses or sunglasses
  • Sunscreen (at least 30 SPF)
  • Rain Gear (rain jacket)
  • Small headlamp or flashlight with extra batteries
  • Bug Spray
  • Towels (2)
  • Toothbrush and toothpaste
  • Deodorant
  • Shower items (shampoo, conditioner, body soap, washcloth, etc…)

OPTIONAL ITEMS

  • Camera (Adventure Links is not liable if camera is lost or damaged).
  • Book or other non­-electronic, van-­friendly activities for commutes
  • Journal/pen/pencils
  • Paper, pre­addressed envelopes, and stamps to send letters home

CLOTHING

  • Light hiking shoes or sneakers
  • Shower shoes (like flip flops or crocs)
  • Water shoes, old sneakers that can get wet, or fixed heel/fixed toe sandals (no strapless sandals, crocs, or flip-flops)
