Adventure Links Overnight Camps offer something for everyone. These camps are ideal for a camper's first time away from home, while also providing new challenges for returning campers.
Shenandoah Adventure is a traveling overnight camp for campers looking for another level of adventure. Explore the scenic Shenandoah Mountains, splash around in rolling cascades, paddle the historic Shenandoah River, camp out at primitive tent camping sites and learn how to prepare your meals in the wilderness. Itinerary
Sunday
Challenge Course at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park, Clifton, VA
Campers will get to know each other and begin learning to work as a team while participating on our High Ropes Course. Campers will then have an introduction to camp craft including Leave No Trace Principles, camp cooking, and campsite set-up, and camp out at our home base at Hemlock Overlook Park.
Monday
Rock Climbing at Elizabeth’s Furnace, VA
Campers will start off their week of adventures rock climbing at Elizabeth’s Furnace. The day will start with a lesson in rock climbing techniques and belay school. They will then have the day to explore the crag. After a refreshing swim, they will head to their campsite for a roaring fire and tasty food.
Tuesday
Paddling on the Shenandoah River, Luray, VA
After eating a campfire cooked meal, campers will head out for to explore the namesake of their trip, the Shenandoah River. Depending on the group, the day may include canoeing, kayaking, or tubing on the Shenandoah River. After the sun and paddling has worn everybody out, campers will head to their campsite in Shenandoah National Park to catch the sunset and take a much needed break.
Wednesday
Natural Waterslides and Cliff Jumping, Shenandoah National Park, VA
Only a short drive away from the campground, campers will have the whole day to explore White Oak Canyon. Today is all about exploration and White Oak Canyon offers some of the best swimming holes in Shenandoah National Park which also feature natural waterslides and the occasional boulder that you can jump into the water from. After all the fun has been had, it’s back to the campsite for another summer sunset and lesson on packing backpacks.
Thursday
Backpacking in Shenandoah National Park, VA
After learning the basics of map reading and trail navigation, we will set out on one of our favorite trails, either Jeremy’s Run or Old Rag, depending on the group’s desires. No matter what trail we set out on, we can guarantee a wonderful view, great food and a night under the stars.
Friday
Backpacking in Shenandoah National Park, VA
The second day of our backpacking trip will include opportunities to work on camp cooking, navigation and map reading skills. After a possible quick stop at a swimming hole, we will head back to Hemlock Overlook Regional Park to clean up our gear and process the week over pizza.
Saturday
Trip Conclusion at Hemlock Overlook Regional Park, Clifton, VA
After a week of adventures, the last day is usually filled with a much deserved late wake-up time and goodbyes to friends, new and old. The formal end to each trip is a cookout for campers and their families to attend.
Pack List
Here's what to bring
To make sure campers come to Adventure Links prepared, we've generated pack lists for our Appalachian Adventure Camps.
Please Note: Campers are encouraged to bring only essential items for the trip. Campers should plan to arrive with one large duffel bag or backpack, one small day pack or back pack, and a small stuff sack containing a compact sleeping bag. Storage space is limited on our Mini-buses, so any bulky or non-essential items may be left at base camp for the length of the trip.
PACK ITEMS
Pack items in a Duffel Bag or Large Backpack for bus travel (no wheels on bags)
- Day pack/Small backpack for day trips:
- 32 oz. re-usable water bottle/Nalgene (2):
- Eating utensils and a mess kit or sturdy bowl and cup (campers will be using to eat breakfast and dinners)
- Sleeping bag:
- Sleeping pad (recommended)
- Camping pillow (small packable size)
- Sunglasses
- Rain Gear (rain jacket)
- Small flashlight or headlamp
- Bug Spray
- Sunscreen (at least 30 SPF)
- Personal toiletries (toothbrush, toothpaste, etc.)
- Towel
CLOTHING
- Sturdy light hiking shoes or sneakers with tread on bottom
- Water Shoes, old sneakers that can get wet, or fixed heel/fixed toe sandals (no strapless sandals or flip-flops):
- Camp Shoes (something comfortable to wear around camp)
- Wool / fleece pullover or light jacket
- Long sleeved shirt (2)
- T-shirts (4)
